Q&A
What is the Campaign and Construction Status?
The Wildcat Foundation is working with architects Crabree, Rohrbaugh & Assoc.--Architects and general contractor Lobar for design, construction and renovations at Memorial Park Stadium. Construction was slated to begin on March 23, 2020. In response to COVID-19 and state mandates, the start of construction was postponed.
Iron Works and Lobar were on site on July 24, 2020, to begin site work and necessary tree removal (photos included on homepage slide show). We are completing interior work on new and existing construction and making plans for appropriate donor recognition and signage, in preparation for a ribbon cutting and dedication of facilities in fall of 2021
Construction is nearly complete with a ribbon cutting planned for Thursday, September 30 at 6 PM and dedication of new facilities as part of football's half time program on October 1.
Please take the time to view the slide show on this page, and monitor construction progress!
Why the Rich Lichtel Field House?
Rich Lichtel was a teacher, mentor, friend, and football coach. A standout quarterback at Bloomsburg University, Rich paired his love of the game as a coach at Mechanicsburg Area Senior High School. More than a coach, Rich mentored both athletes, and those not so inclined. He led, by walking beside you, with his arm around your shoulder. At age 60, Rich died too young.
Shortly after his death, the Rich Lichtel Fund was established with the Foundation for Enhancing Communities (TFEC), with a simple mission "to help kids". Over time, this evolved to build a fieldhouse to honor his legacy.
In 2017, the Wildcat Foundation, the education foundation that provides support to the Mechanicsburg Area School District (MASD), approached stakeholders of the Rich Lichtel Fund with the proposal to partner to provide improvements to facilities at John H. Frederick Field, home stadium for football and other extra-curricular activities for MASD.
With a lead gift from the Rich Lichtel Fund, the Wildcat Foundation embarked upon this Building the Future Together, capital campaign effort. When complete, the stadium will boast refurbished a concession stand, updated public restrooms, officials' locker room, and training room, a new ticketing center, and a fieldhouse honoring Coach Lichtel. Until all funds are pledged or donated however, this will be a phased project. While we continue to raise funds, Phase 1 begin in July, 2020 with anticipated completion of the fieldhouse and support facility for the 2021 season.
Why this project?
John H. Frederick Field is the home field and stadium for MASD athletics and extracurricular activities. Despite hosting over 100 events annually, the stadium has not seen significant updates since built in 1947...over 70 years ago!
With age, and an every growing community and MASD student body, facilities improvements and construction will meet the needs of our student athletes, those who participate in other, extracurricular activities, and the community at large.
Who has invested in this project?
This campaign is supported by individuals, local, regional and national businesses, and foundations. We began with a lead gift from the Rich Lichtel Fund, in addition, the Wildcat Foundation has committed nearly $300,000 to Building the Future Together.
We recognize and thank the following, who have given or pledged at least $1,000, through March 22, 2021.
